What is the Vigyan
Bhairava Tantra?
Title meaning: "Vigyan" = knowledge/consciousness;
"Bhairava" = God. The title translates as "Knowledge of
God" or "God-Consciousness."
शीर्षक का अर्थ: "विज्ञान" = ज्ञान/चेतना;

The Dialogue Format
●
Shiva represents God, Consciousness — the answerer.
●
●
Parvati represents the Goddess, Energy — the
questioner, asking what genuine seekers would ask.
●
●
Love is presented as the very path to understanding
God.
●
The Central Dilemma
(Verses 1-9)
Parvati asks: is God's nature words, letters, forms, sound, or energy
rising through the chakras? If individual forms are divisible, how can they be
part of an indivisible Supreme Being?
|
Verse 9 — श्लोक 9 “Whatever has been declared as the divided forms of God — know that,
O Goddess, to be insubstantial, like a magic show, like an illusion or dream,
or an imaginary city in the sky.”
Key teaching: the divided forms are illusion. We are not separate from
God or from one another — as images on a cinema screen are not separate from
the screen and the projector.
Verse 15 — The Most
Important Verse
|
Verse 15 — श्लोक 15 “One may experience the joy of God within oneself, when the mind is
still and free of thoughts. That state of God, full of bliss, is the
Goddess.”
●
Location of joy: within oneself, not external.
●
●
Condition: the mind must be still and thought-free.
●
●
The musk-deer analogy: the deer searches outside for
the scent that is already within its own pouch — just as humans search
externally for a happiness that already lies within.
●
Why 112 Methods Instead of
Philosophy
Words cannot fully explain Ultimate Reality — only direct experience
can. As in the Buddha's arrow parable, one need not first debate who shot the
arrow; one must remove it. Religion asks us to accept others' beliefs about
God; spiritual practice asks us to have our own experience of God.

Part
Two: The 112 Meditations — Category-wise Study
Each category below presents its central verses with English text,
Hindi translation, practice steps and the underlying teaching.
Category A — Breath-Based
Meditations (v. 24-27, 50, 51, 55, 64)
|
Verse 24 — श्लोक 24 “The Supreme Energy (breath) goes upward with exhalation and
downward with inhalation. By concentrating on the two places of its origin,
one acquires the state of fulfilment.”
Practice: sit comfortably, close the eyes, observe the breath without
controlling it, and give special attention to the gap between the in-breath and
out-breath. Maintain continuous awareness of that gap.
Why it works: the gap is a moment of complete stillness; breath is the
Supreme Energy itself, arising from God and returning to God — in stillness we
find God.
|
Verse 27 — श्लोक 27 “When, by itself, the breath is retained after inhalation or
exhalation, then in the end, through the Energy known as peace, Peace is
revealed.”
As practice deepens, breath naturally slows, becomes subtle, and
eventually pauses on its own — bringing deep peace, and for some, the rising of
kundalini toward liberation.
Category B — Kundalini
& Chakra Meditations (v. 28-29, 31, 67)
Background: the subtle body has seven major chakras from Mooladhara
(base of spine) to Sahasrara (crown), connected by the central channel
Sushumna. Kundalini is dormant energy at the base which, when awakened, rises
through Sushumna piercing each chakra toward liberation.
|
Verse 28 — श्लोक 28 “Meditate on the energy in the form of a bright ray of light, rising
from the root energy centre, becoming subtler and subtler, until finally
dissolving at the highest centre. Then God appears.”
Practice: visualise light rising from the base of the spine through
the central channel, piercing each chakra, dissolving at the crown; then begin
again, continuing for up to thirty minutes.
|
Verse 31 — श्लोक 31 “Concentrate without thoughts on a point between and just above the
eyebrows. The Divine Energy breaks out and rises above to the crown of the
head, immediately filling one completely with her ecstasy.”
This is the third-eye (Bhrumadhya) point — the only meditation Lord
Krishna gives in the Bhagavad Gita. Since eye-movement and thought are linked,
an unmoving, unblinking gaze quickly stills the mind.
Category C — Void &
Emptiness Meditations (v. 30, 32, 43-48, 58, 92, 94, 95, 122)
94, 95, 122)
|
Verses 43-48 (summary) —
With mind free of thoughts, concentrate on one's body, and imagine
space simultaneously pervading in all directions... consider the skin to be
the wall of an empty body with nothing inside. By meditating like this, one
reaches a place beyond meditation.”
Teaching: we are not the body; we are consciousness. Like air inside a
pot that is one with the air outside once the pot breaks, dissolving
identification with the body unites us with the Whole.
|
Verse 58 — श्लोक 58 “O Great Goddess, one should consider this entire universe to be a
void. Then the mind will dissolve and one will be absorbed into the Void.”
This void is empty of separate selfhood, yet full of God — everything
is interconnected and One. Holding this view dissolves stress, attachment to
outcomes, and constant mental chatter.
Category D — Sound-Based
Meditations (v. 38-42, 73, 86, 90, 91, 114)
|
Verse 38 — श्लोक 38 “Bathe deeply in the continuous sound of a river flowing, or by
closing the ears, hear the unstruck sound of God. One will then realise God.”
The 'unstruck sound' (anahata nada) is spontaneous, not caused by
striking — the sound of silence itself heard within, e.g. as humming, bells, or
a distant conch, when external noise is blocked.
|
Verse 42 — श्लोक 42 “Chant AUM audibly. Gradually the sound diminishes. By concentrating
on the point where the sound ends into the void, one becomes Shiva.”
Sound is a springboard to silence — just as a tensed body relaxes more
deeply after tension, sound leads to a deeper stillness than silence approached
directly.
Note that short cut is offene wrong cut . Don't do it.
Category E — Looking /
Gazing Meditations — Trāṭaka (v. 33, 59, 60, 80, 84, 87, 88, 113, 115)
115)
General rule: remove glasses/lenses, avoid blinking, keep the body
still, and practise in pleasant surroundings; these techniques are
heat-producing, so avoid practising in already-hot conditions.
|
Verse 60 — श्लोक 60 “Cast one's sight on a vast open place, with no trees, mountains,
walls, etc. When one's mind has completely dissolved, one is born anew.”
Two factors are at work: the vastness itself (mind cannot coexist with
the infinite) and the absence of any object (without an object, there is no
subject — the ego dissolves).
|
Verse 80 — श्लोक 80 “Look firmly without blinking at the gross form of any object. The
mind will be without support, and within a short while one will reside in
Shiva.”
Practice: choose a beloved object — a symbol, picture, idol, candle
flame, or mandala — and gaze without blinking; when eyes tire, close briefly
and resume, without changing the object.
Category F —
Sense-Withdrawal Meditations — Pratyāhāra (v. 36, 67, 89, 114)
|
Verse 89 — श्लोक 89 “When any sense organ is obstructed externally or is restrained by
one, from carrying out its function, one will then enter the void that is
beyond duality. There indeed, one's True Self will be revealed.”
Senses draw attention outward; blocking them (eyes closed, ears
covered) redirects consciousness inward, where duality dissolves and the True
Self is revealed — as a wave finding it is, at depth, only ocean.
इंद्रियाँ ध्यान को बाहर की ओर खींचती हैं;
Category G — Joy / Bliss
Meditations (v. 65-74, 103)
|
Verse 65 — श्लोक 65 “One should consider one's entire body or the entire universe to be
full of one's own bliss. Then, through one's own nectar of bliss, one will be
full of the Supreme Bliss.”
Joy is our inherent nature, needing nothing external. Held as a belief
throughout the day — 'my body is nothing but joy' — it changes how life is met
and how others respond.
|
Verse 74 — श्लोक 74 “Wherever the mind finds satisfaction, in that very place focus
one's attention. Then, the Supreme Bliss of one's true nature will manifest
itself.”
Tantra does not oppose the pleasures of the senses — money, food,
music, company — but teaches enjoying them without attachment, and moving
toward the greater pleasure of the soul that lies beyond them.
Category H — Awareness /
Witnessing Meditations (v. 61, 62, 106, 108, 117, 129, 136)
136)
|
Verse 62 — श्लोक 62 “When the mind has left a thought, and is restrained from moving
towards another thought, it comes to rest in the middle. Then, through that
middle state of being, one's true nature blossoms brilliantly.”
Only the present moment is real; past and future are constructs of
thought. Turning ordinary acts — walking, bathing, talking — into occasions for
full attention brings this middle state into daily life.
|
Verse 108 — श्लोक 108 “O Deer Eyed One, by stopping all thoughts, the mind will be without
support. Then the self will become the Supreme Self of God.”
Just as the body needs food, the mind needs thoughts to survive;
withdrawing that fuel — returning again and again to bare awareness — causes
the mind to weaken and eventually dissolve.
Category I — Belief /
Perception-Change Meditations (v. 63, 95-102, 104-110, 124-134)
124-134)
Core principle: our thoughts create our reality. The senses give
inaccurate information; inaccurate beliefs built on them create an inaccurate
experience of reality. To see Truth, one must change one's beliefs.
|
Verse 107 — श्लोक 107 “Leaving aside concern for one's own body, one should continuously
believe that the same consciousness is present in oneself and also in other
bodies. In a few days, one will be all pervading.”
This is the heart of non-dualism: the same consciousness pervades all
beings. When another is unkind, recognising 'I am that person too' dissolves
anger and restores love, since the world reflects back what is given to it.
|
Verse 135 — श्लोक 135 “Neither bondage nor liberation for me. Those terrified of these
concepts should see them as images of the mind, just like the image of the
sun in water.”
As the sun in water appears to ripple or vanish while the sun itself
never changes, bondage and liberation are appearances in the mind alone — the
Self is always already free.
Category J — Special /
Miscellaneous Meditations (v. 75, 78-83, 93, 111, 112, 118-121)
|
Verse 111 — श्लोक 111 “One should swiftly turn his body round and round, till he falls to
the ground. At the end of the energy of motion, the Supreme State is born.”
Exhaustion and dizziness silence the mind automatically; the golden
moment is only seized if awareness is maintained through the fall — otherwise
the mind resumes thinking and the opportunity passes.
थकावट और चक्कर स्वतः मन को शांत कर देते हैं;
|
Verse 75 — श्लोक 75 “Concentrate on the state where sleep has not fully appeared, but
the external world has disappeared. In that state, the Supreme Goddess is
revealed.”
This is the subtle gap between waking and sleep. Concentrating too
hard causes full wakefulness; drifting too far causes sleep. Retaining a thread
of awareness in that gap opens the fourth state, Turiya.
Part
Three: Final Philosophical Discussion (v. 138-163)
|
Verse 138 — श्लोक 138 “Mind, intellect, energy of life and limited self. O Dear One, when
this group of four disappears, then the state of God appears.”
This is not the union of two separate things but the recognition of a
union that always was — like a see-saw, as the ego comes down, the awareness of
God rises.
On Worship and Ritual (v.
144-153)
|
Verse 147 — श्लोक 147 “Offering of flowers, etc., is not called worship. One should firmly
fix the heart on the Supreme Space, which is beyond thought. From that love,
there is union with God. That indeed is worship.”
External ritual matters less than inner change; fixing the heart on
the boundless Supreme Space, beyond thought, is the true offering.
The Final Meditation —
Hamsa (v. 154-156)
|
Verse 155a-156 — श्लोक 155अ-156 “The breath makes the sound Sa when it goes outside, and again makes
the sound Ha when it enters inside. 'Hamsa, Hamsa.' This mantra is
continuously recited by a living being, 21,600 times during a day and night.”
Ham (हं) = 'I'; Sa (स) = 'That' (God); together, Hamsa means 'I am
That.' Listening to this natural sound of the breath — the most universal
and easiest of all 112 meditations — stills the mind and reveals abiding
peace and joy.
Final
Conclusion & Key Takeaways
The Core Teaching
●
Still the mind — the fundamental requirement of every
technique.
●
●
Be aware of the self, throughout the day, not only in
sitting practice.
●
●
Look within — God is found within, not in external
objects or circumstances.
●
●
Change beliefs — our beliefs shape the reality we
experience.
●
●
Be joyful and loving — this is our true, unconditioned
nature.
●
How to Practise
●
Choose ONE technique that resonates most; mastery of
one is sufficient.
●
●
Practise it daily as sitting meditation.
●
●
Maintain awareness throughout the day as a
complementary practice — the two reinforce each other.
●
●
Progress depends on the intensity of one's desire; even
a few thought-free minutes can bring lasting stillness.
●
प्रगति इच्छा की तीव्रता पर निर्भर करती है;
Most Important Verse (15)
|
Verse 15 — श्लोक 15 “One may experience the joy of God within oneself, when the mind is
still and free of thoughts.”
Most Important Teaching
|
Verse 135 — श्लोक 135 “Neither bondage nor liberation for me. Those terrified of these
concepts should see them as images of the mind, just like the image of the
sun in water.”
“Many are the paths of men,
but they all in the end come to Me.” — Bhagavad Gita (4:11)
